Living in close proximity to others takes something special. Especially the ability to overlook minor annoyances.
Hopefully your neighbors will all be polite, and thoughtfully quiet. Hopefully neighbors will maintain their little piece of the world. Hopefully neighbors will be considerate of you privacy. Hopefully neighbors will properly supervise children and pets. These are the basic requirements of good neighbors.
Recently, our very good neighbors have been busy with home improvement projects. Their seaside colors and nautical design are not our taste, but to each their own. Our neighbors long for the beach. Everything is well maintained. What more can we ask?
Our neighbor’s most recent project was sorting and reorganizing. Their new storage is attractive. But….
From previous experience, I have learned our complaints are meaningless. I don’t want to start a battle after six years of living peacefully side by side. However, I am distressed by the pile of trash that has developed behind their storage and just off my backyard. Adding to my displeasure, is that this pile has accumulated just as we have taken more active measures to sell our home. Who wants to buy a home overlooking a trash pile? Even a neatly bagged trash pile does not show off our home to best advantage.
We have offered the use of our pickup truck, and our assistance, to transport the pile to the dump. None of us know where the dump is, nor how much the fees will be. I believe more than one trip to the dump will be required.
I may have found my next dream home. I am anxious to move on, but we can’t move until our current home sells. Cross your fingers, send up prayers, and wish me luck. I need all the help I can get.
Our old neighbour was a bit like that, but he also had a massive stack of steel, timber, spare parts and equipment and he was the sort of guy that did not care who borrowed his stuff, as long as it came back, and he was always willing to help with anything at any time. So a bit of mess and starting the truck at 3am was a small price to pay given that we were never really short of anything and we only had to call on the guy and he’d drop everything to help us do anything.

Often there is good to provide balance, and if I wasn’t trying to sell, I would just wait a little. But things don’t seem to happen when they are convenient.

I haven’t sold many houses but from what I have seen a little mess like that doesn’t really make it harder to sell. If it was a pig sty I can see it being a problem but chances are the prospective buyers also have a pile of crap at their own homes and can relate to needing a clean up.

It is always hard to tell. In general, most people judge the neighborhood by how neat it is, and this is very visible. We will just help fix it, and not worry.

You can’t truly judge a neighbourhood until you park in the street at midnight on a Friday and Saturday night. Visual mess is one thing but drunken yahoos tend to be like mushrooms, they only sprout in the dark.

Good point. I’ll do that test for my next dream home.

Two things I regretted about the location of this place, I didn’t stand out the front on a windy day and I didn’t realise the neighbours sat outside 4 nights a week drinking. In summer on a Saturday night all we used to hear was loud voices and their 5 year old playing basketball until 2am.

You are starting to make staying put seem like a good idea. At least I know what I’ve got here.

Better the devil you know 🙂
I must admit when we were looking at moving a few years ago the biggest stumbling blocks were my laziness. Laziness to talk to a bank, laziness to clean up what’s here, and laziness to put in the effort to like check out houses for the things I hated in this house.

We never really expected to stay here, but we will see how this works out.

Ugh! Good luck! I was just arguing with my neighbors today about noise. This was timely for me.

Noise is a good trigger for conflict, also animals, parking, weeds.

Yeah, it’s a tough call, isn’t it. The offer to truck the stuff to the dump…wherever it is…is a good idea. Even it it costs a few bucks, hopefully the clearing out the trash pile will be just that one little thing that will help close the deal on the house and you’re outa there. But still, it’s sad you have to do that. I hope all goes well.

A little inconvenience, but solvable. I shouldn’t have started looking at houses yet. Counting my chickens before they hatch. What a silly expression for a city girl.

have a positive out look, the trash will be cleaned up eventually; the house will eventually sell and you will eventually move to where you want to go. of course it may not happen when you want it to happen but it will happen eventually…..

You are right. The future will come, in the future, without worry or effort.
